Best Free Things to do in Perth, Australia

As someone who grew up in the isolated state of Perth, Western Australia, we were kind of forced to go out and see what happening. So from someone who personally knows Perth, I'll give you the best things to do.

  1. Cottesloe Beach

Cottesloe Beach is one of those destinations that every Perth kid has

been to at least 10 times. In summer it's filled with people wanting to tan on the beach, cool down in the Indian Ocean and fill their stomachs with ice-cream and fish and chips. In winter there obviously aren't many people wanting to go for a dip in the freezing weather, but a brave few swim in the ridiculous temperatures to train or just to feel the pure torture of that ice cold water on their skins. The rest of the sane people love to sit on the beach eating fish and chips and watching the amazing sunset that you just can't get enough of.

2. Noble Falls

Noble Falls is a lot of fun for people of all ages; the younger ones love to explore in the water and the bush, trying to look for lizards and little fish. There is also rock hopping and a nice trail to walk around in the bush (toilets are available). After you've finished your walk and adventuring, across the road is a family friendly pub, to fill you stomachs with and play some pool, or a video game.

3. Walk in Kings Park

Kings park is one of the prettiest walks that you an take in Perth, where you are able to also learn about the native wildlife, and the history of the park which was established in 1892. You are able to wander around the park by yourself or you could get a free guided tour at 10am, or 2pm every week day. While you are there why not take a visit to the Aboriginal Art Gallery.

4. Fremantle Markets

If your a fan of markets, this is the place for you; It's free entry but trust me, you'll spend something. It's open on Friday, Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to late afternoon, you are able to drive, or take a train to Fremantle, then walk or hire a bike. The markets are filled with fresh fruit and veges, crafts that people make and are completely passionate about, and are more than happy to talk about, but what gets you the most is the enhancing atmosphere of the place.

5. Wine Tastings

The Swan Valley area is known for its wine tastings. Now I'm still not of legal age, but the amount of times I've been driving with legally able to drink people looking for something to do, we end up in the Swan Valley area to do some wine tastings, and more often than not they will buy something (so it must be good). Along with the fabulous wine tastings, you are able to go to the Margret River Chocolate Factory which is along one of the main roads in the area; they have free tasting of their famous dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate, the best part is that you are able to have as much as you like! Chocolate testings isn't the only thing that they do, they make a large variety of chocolate, in many shapes and size (as to be expected), they serve an amazing hot chocolate and ice-cream!

6. Maritime Museum

Wooo another free thing! The Western Australian Maritime Museum is located in Fremantle, where you are able to learn about the sea that is surrounding you, and the sea beyond that. There is a huge display about the history throughout the years and even better there's a big yacht on the inside hanging from the ceiling!!!

7. Art Gallery

The art gallery of Western Australia was established in 1895, its one of the best places to learn and to see the Indigenous culture, both national and internationally. This is a place that cannot be missed if you're wishing to experience the culture of Perth, and the only day it's not open is Tuesday!

8. The Library

Now I know what a lot of people think about library's and that people use the recourses as study, or a means of escape, but just hear me out and you'll understand. The City of Perth library is work of art, it has 5 levels and each one is unique with an amazing art work on the roof, so remember to look up! (p.s. they have a tree inside on the kids level!)

9. Whiteman National Park

Whiteman National Park is a really nice place to have a picnic, catch an old fashioned train and splash in the water park. The kids can play in the playground, or the whole family can get involved in a good old game of cricket or footy because there's definitely enough space.

10. Now For Something Completely Different

I knew i just had to use that line somewhere in this, so I apologise. In Perth there are so many opportunities to get down and nerdy, and I know I've already mentioned the library but for those weird people who love politics you are able to view the parliamentary proceedings, in the Parliament of Western Australia. After you take your trip into politics you are able to head over to the university of Western Australia to catch a free public lecture on a variety of different subjects throughout the year.
